Tokyo, Japan – Japan is set to streamline its administrative processes further by integrating driver’s licenses with its national identification system, “My Number.” Starting from March 2024, citizens will have the option to use their My Number cards as a valid form of driver’s identification.
The government’s decision, approved at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, aligns with its broader push for digitalisation. The revised Road Traffic Act, enacted in 2022, paved the way for this integration by allowing individuals to register their driver’s license information on their My Number cards.
How it works: To utilise the My Number card as a driver’s license, individuals must register specific information, including their license number, expiration date, license type, any visual impairments, and a recent photo.
Key points:
- Dual-option: Citizens can choose between a traditional physical driver’s license or the digital version on their My Number card.
- International driving: For international driving, the traditional physical license may still be necessary in certain countries.
- Cost-effective: The fee for acquiring a new My Number driver’s license is slightly lower than the regular license fee.
This integration is expected to simplify various administrative procedures and enhance the efficiency of government services. As Japan continues its digital transformation, this initiative marks a significant step towards a more streamlined and technologically advanced society.
