In a significant diplomatic development, Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, the Ambassador-designate of India to Japan, met with the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 28, 2025. The meeting marked an important step in formalizing her new appointment as India’s envoy to Japan.

Following her interaction with the President, Ms. Mallick also called on the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, to discuss India’s strategic relations with Japan and the growing scope of bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Ms. Mallick, a seasoned diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), brings with her extensive experience in international relations, policy negotiation, and multilateral engagement. Over the years, she has held key positions in Indian missions abroad and in the Ministry of External Affairs, contributing significantly to India’s diplomatic outreach.
Her appointment comes at a time when India and Japan continue to strengthen their partnership in areas such as trade, technology, defense, infrastructure, and cultural exchange. The two nations share a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, built on shared democratic values, mutual respect, and a shared vision for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
During her meetings with the President and Prime Minister, discussions are believed to have focused on enhancing cooperation under frameworks such as the Act East Policy, clean energy transition, digital innovation, and people-to-people connectivity.
As India’s new envoy in Tokyo, Ms. Mallick is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing bilateral projects, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and supporting new initiatives in business, education, and technology.
Her appointment is seen as a continuation of India’s commitment to deepening its longstanding friendship with Japan a relationship that remains one of the cornerstones of India’s foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific.
