A special cultural and spiritual event titled “Bhagavad Gita and Its Relevance Today” was held at the Todaiji Cultural Centre within the historic Todaiji Temple complex in Nara, bringing together scholars, diplomats, monks, and members of the Indian and Japanese communities.
The event underscored the universal relevance of the Bhagavad Gita in contemporary times. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr. Nayab Saini, addressed the gathering through a video message, highlighting the Gita’s enduring teachings on duty, righteousness, and inner balance. A short video message by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on the International Gita Mahotsav was also showcased, reinforcing India’s commitment to promoting the Gita’s philosophical legacy globally.
The program began with opening remarks by Mr. Chandru Appar, Consul General of India, who emphasized the deep cultural and spiritual connections between India and Japan, noting how shared philosophical traditions continue to strengthen bilateral ties.
The occasion was graced by the Chief Monk of Todaiji Temple, Nara, Rev. Hashimura Koei, whose presence added spiritual significance to the event. Representing the Hon’ble Governor of Nara, Mr. Takanori Kawakami, Director-General of the Governor’s Office, also attended, reflecting strong local support for cultural exchange initiatives.
A key highlight of the event was the keynote address by Prof. Kazuhiko Yamamoto from the Department of Buddhist Studies at Otani University. He spoke on the historic and philosophical significance of the Bhagavad Gita, drawing insightful parallels between its teachings and Buddhist thought, and explaining its relevance in addressing modern-day ethical and personal challenges.
Adding a devotional dimension to the program, Ms. Radha Madhyastha, Coordinator of Geeta Pariwar Japan, chanted select verses from the sacred text, creating a deeply reflective atmosphere for the audience.
The event also featured cultural performances that celebrated Indian heritage, along with an interactive quiz on the Bhagavad Gita, engaging participants and encouraging deeper understanding of the scripture.
Held at one of Japan’s most iconic temples, the event stood as a powerful symbol of India-Japan cultural harmony, showcasing how ancient wisdom continues to inspire dialogue, understanding, and shared values in today’s world.
