The Japanese government on February 28 announced plans to evacuate its nationals currently residing in Iran following military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. The decision comes as tensions in the region intensify, raising concerns over the safety of foreign citizens.

According to officials, around 200 Japanese nationals are currently in Iran. While no injuries or casualties have been reported so far, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has issued an urgent advisory calling on its citizens to leave the country as soon as possible.

Evacuation Plans Underway

Due to widespread flight cancellations and delays at airports across the region, Japanese authorities are prioritizing land-based evacuation efforts. Buses are expected to transport citizens to neighboring countries, where onward travel arrangements will be coordinated. The government is working closely with diplomatic missions and local authorities to ensure a safe and orderly departure.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi convened an emergency meeting with senior officials to coordinate logistics and review contingency measures. The operation is reportedly drawing on lessons learned from evacuation efforts carried out in June last year during previous regional instability.

Broader Security Advisory Issued

In addition to the evacuation from Iran, the ministry has issued security warnings to Japanese citizens in 54 other countries and regions. The advisory specifically urges individuals to avoid areas near U.S. military bases due to the heightened risk of retaliatory attacks from Iran.

Officials emphasized that the safety of Japanese nationals abroad remains the government’s top priority. Embassies and consulates in affected regions have been instructed to maintain close contact with local communities and provide timely updates as the situation evolves.

Rising Regional Uncertainty

The latest escalation has significantly heightened uncertainty across the Middle East. Diplomatic observers note that retaliatory actions could further destabilize the region, impacting international travel and security conditions.

Japan’s swift response underscores its commitment to protecting its citizens overseas during times of crisis. As evacuation efforts move forward, authorities continue to monitor developments closely and stand ready to implement additional measures if necessary.

The government has urged all Japanese nationals in affected areas to remain vigilant, follow official advisories, and stay in regular contact with diplomatic missions until the situation stabilizes.
