In a major step toward clean energy transformation, Japan has agreed to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Green Hydrogen in Uttar Pradesh, following high-level talks between a visiting UP government delegation and Japanese industry leaders.

The announcement was made after the UP delegation, led by officials from the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), explored cutting-edge hydrogen energy technologies in Japan, including the Toyota Mirai, a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that emits only water.

A Bold Step Toward Zero-Emission Mobility

The Toyota Mirai, which combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, fits seamlessly with Uttar Pradesh’s vision for a zero-emission transport policy, making it a key focus of the visit. By integrating such technology, the state hopes to revolutionize its mobility sector while drastically reducing its carbon footprint.

According to the official release, Japanese entrepreneurs and technology leaders expressed strong interest in supporting Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy ambitions. As a result, they have committed to setting up a specialized green hydrogen Centre of Excellence in the state—marking a pivotal move in India’s clean energy mission.

Global Collaboration for Clean Energy Innovation

The discussions between the two sides also focused on developing green hydrogen production capacity and fostering energy innovation. Officials close to the developments noted that the collaboration aims to create a robust ecosystem for clean energy in Uttar Pradesh, positioning the state as a national leader in hydrogen technology.

UPNEDA Director Inderjit Singh stressed the importance of deepening partnerships with global institutions to enhance renewable energy efforts in the state, particularly through solar, hydro, and biomass-based solutions.

Exposure to Global Best Practices

During their visit, the UP delegation toured multiple state-of-the-art facilities in Yamanashi Prefecture, a hub for hydrogen innovation in Japan. The itinerary included:

  • NESRAD Green Hydrogen Plant
  • Suntory Hakushu Distillery, which hosts a pioneering power-to-gas technology plant
  • Hydrogen Research Center, dedicated to applied R&D in hydrogen systems

These visits provided valuable insights into international best practices and advanced clean energy models that Uttar Pradesh may now replicate or adapt locally.
