Japanese electronic component giant Murata Manufacturing Co. has announced plans to set up its first facility in India in Chennai, marking a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s electronics manufacturing growth story.
State Industries Minister T. R. B. Rajaa revealed the development on social media, describing Murata’s decision as a testament to the strength of Tamil Nadu’s electronics ecosystem.
“This is Murata’s first facility in India, and they’ve chosen Chennai — a decision that speaks volumes about the strength of our ecosystem. Our electronics sector is rapidly moving from assembly to high-value component manufacturing,” Rajaa said.
A High-Value Electronics Push
Murata’s new facility will be located in OneHub Chennai Industrial Park, spanning 3,500 square meters. The plant will focus on packaging and shipping multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), a critical component used in smartphones, laptops, automobiles, healthcare devices, and industrial automation systems.
Murata’s products are trusted by leading global brands such as Apple, Samsung, and Sony and have even been part of groundbreaking projects like NASA’s Mars helicopter.
Currently, 60% of the company’s MLCC production is based in Japan, but Murata expects this figure to drop to 50% as it expands manufacturing overseas.
Why Chennai?
The industries minister highlighted Tamil Nadu’s transformation into one of Asia’s most integrated Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) clusters, with capabilities spanning printed circuit board assembly to complete product integration.
The state’s matching electronics components manufacturing scheme is expected to attract more global players, accelerating its transition to high-value electronics manufacturing.
“Chennai and its surrounding districts today form one of the most integrated EMS clusters in Asia. This momentum will only grow, bringing many more such global players into the state,” Rajaa noted.
