Tokyo and Kyoto have emerged as global hotspots for “noctourism” — nighttime tourism — according to a new ranking by U.K.-based travel company Travelbag.

Tokyo claimed the No. 2 spot globally, just behind New York City and ahead of destinations like Dubai and Singapore. Kyoto also secured a strong position, landing at No. 6 among over 100 major cities assessed for their nighttime appeal.

The report evaluated cities based on factors such as safety, number of nighttime venues, and foot traffic, using social media activity as one key indicator.

“Tokyo offers a neon-lit wonderland after sunset,” the report noted, highlighting popular attractions like the panoramic views from Tokyo Tower, the lively alleyways of Shinjuku’s Golden Gai, and guided food tours through traditional izakayas.

Kyoto, known for its historical charm, draws nighttime visitors with illuminated temples, peaceful strolls along the Kamogawa River, and seasonal light-up events in ancient districts like Gion.

As noctourism gains popularity, Japan’s blend of modern energy and cultural depth makes it a must-visit destination after dark.
