In an extraordinary spiritual transformation, Hoshi Takayuki, a 41-year-old entrepreneur from Tokyo who once owned a chain of 15 beauty product stores, has abandoned his business empire to embrace the life of a Shiva devotee. Civilly renamed Bala Kumbha Gurumuni, he is currently walking the Kanwar Yatra in India, clad in saffron and joined by around 20 followers.
A Journey Rooted in Ancient Destiny
The spiritual spark struck two decades ago in Tamil Nadu, where Takayuki underwent a Nadi astrology reading—an ancient script-based practice. He was told he had lived a past life in the Himalayas as a sage and was destined to walk the path of Shaivism. A vivid dream of Uttarakhand’s mountains further convinced him of his mission.
Renouncing Business, Embracing Devotion
Moved by these spiritual experiences, Takayuki handed over his businesses to trusted followers, transforming his Tokyo home into a Shiva temple, complete with daily rituals. He also built a second shrine nearby for public devotion.
Now identified as Bala Kumbha Gurumuni, he travels between Japan and India, deeply involved in Shaivism.
Pilgrimage and Expansion
At present, Gurumuni is participating in the Kanwar Yatra, the annual monsoon pilgrimage to fetch Ganga water and walk barefoot for Lord Shiva—a journey from 11 July to 23 July 2025.
In Dehradun, he has set up a two-day free food camp for fellow kanwariyas alongside his group of Japanese followers.
Title and Grand Aspirations in India
Recently, the Niranjani Akhara, one of India’s 13 traditional Hindu seer sects, announced it will bestow upon Gurumuni the prestigious title of Mahamandaleshwar, recognizing his dedication to spreading Sanatan Dharma.
He has already acquired 35 acres in Puducherry to build a grand Shiva temple, and plans to set up an ashram in Uttarakhand—the region he refers to as “Devbhoomi” or sacred land—where he aims to rediscover his “lost village” from a past life.
