Tokyo, May 8 – The Detective Conan franchise continues its impressive dominance at the Japan box office, with its latest installment, One-eyed Flashback, claiming the top spot for the third consecutive weekend. According to Kogyo Tsushinsha, the 28th film in the long-running anime series outpaced both A Minecraft Movie and Marvel Studios’ new release Thunderbolts, which opened at #3 in its debut weekend.
During the extended Golden Week holiday (May 2–4), One-eyed Flashback pulled in 1.422 billion yen (approximately USD 9.9 million) with 969,000 tickets sold—a minimal 15% dip from the previous weekend. As of May 6, a substitute holiday in Japan, the film had earned a staggering 10.4 billion yen (USD 72.34 million) from 7.26 million admissions in just 19 days.
This box office feat places One-eyed Flashback as the third Detective Conan film to surpass the 10 billion yen milestone, following Black Iron Submarine (2023) and The Million-dollar Pentagram (2024). Impressively, the film now ranks #43 on Japan’s all-time box office list, overtaking global hits like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
Meanwhile, another iconic franchise held firm in the rankings. Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Art World Tales, the 44th theatrical entry in the Doraemon series, slipped from 6th to 9th place in its ninth weekend but remains a steady presence in the top 10, showcasing the franchise’s enduring popularity.
However, not all new releases found similar success. The live-action comedy Ya Boy Kongming!, which debuted in fifth place last weekend, failed to maintain its momentum, dropping to #11 in its second weekend, according to Oricon News.
The full Top 10 japan box office ranking in Japan for May 2–4 (based on ticket sales) is as follows:
- Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback (3rd weekend)
- A Minecraft Movie (2nd weekend)
- Thunderbolts* (Debut)
