Kazuo Umezu, Renowned Horror Manga Artist, Passes Away at 88

Tokyo – Kazuo Umezu, a legendary figure in the world of horror manga, passed away on October 28th at the age of 88. Known for his iconic works such as “The Drifting Classroom” and “The Food Sucks,” Umezu’s contributions to the genre have left an enduring impact on both domestic and international audiences.

Born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1936, Umezu began his career as a manga artist in 1955, while still a high school student. He quickly gained recognition for his distinctive style, characterized by grotesque imagery and psychological terror. His early works, including “Hebi Shojo” and “Nekome Kozo,” solidified his reputation as a master of horror.

One of his most celebrated works, “The Drifting Classroom,” follows a group of elementary school students who are mysteriously transported to a post-apocalyptic world. This series, adapted into novels and films, earned Umezu critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award.

In addition to his horror masterpieces, Umezu also created comedic works like “Makoto-chan,” a popular series featuring a mischievous kindergartner. His unique sense of humor and ability to blend dark and light tones further showcased his versatility as a storyteller.

Umezu’s influence extends far beyond Japan. His works have been translated into various languages, captivating readers worldwide. He was honored with the heritage award at the Angouleme International Comics Festival in 2018, recognizing his significant contributions to the world of comics.

Even in his later years, Umezu continued to create art, releasing new paintings in 2022. His legacy as a visionary artist and pioneer of horror manga will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
