Senior Japanese leader Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday inspected the Japan-supported subway system in New Delhi, highlighting the deep and long-standing infrastructure partnership between India and Japan.
During his visit, Motegi reviewed key sections of the Delhi Metro, a flagship urban transport project developed with significant financial and technical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The inspection underscored Japan’s role as one of India’s most trusted development partners, particularly in the area of sustainable urban infrastructure.
Motegi praised the Delhi Metro as a model of efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility, noting that the project reflects shared India–Japan values such as quality construction, long-term planning, and people-centric development. He emphasized that Japan’s involvement goes beyond funding and represents a commitment to improving everyday life for millions of commuters in India’s capital.
Japanese support has been instrumental across multiple phases of the Delhi Metro, making it one of the largest recipients of Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA). The collaboration has helped introduce advanced rolling stock, signalling systems, and energy-efficient technologies, contributing to reduced traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions.
Indian officials accompanying Motegi highlighted that the Delhi Metro stands as a symbol of successful bilateral cooperation and expressed appreciation for Japan’s consistent support in India’s urban modernization efforts. They also noted that similar cooperation is expanding to other metro projects across Indian cities.
Motegi’s inspection visit reaffirmed the strategic and economic partnership between India and Japan, with infrastructure development continuing to be a key pillar of bilateral ties. Both sides reiterated their commitment to working together on future projects that promote sustainable growth, connectivity, and regional development.
