BEML Begins Manufacturing India’s First Indigenous B28 Bullet Train at Bengaluru’s Aditya Plant

Introduction

India’s high-speed rail ambitions have taken a decisive leap forward. BEML Limited has commenced manufacturing of India’s first indigenous high-speed trainset, the B28, at its newly inaugurated Aditya facility in Bengaluru. This milestone marks a defining moment in the country’s push toward self-reliance in railway technology  and signals that India’s bullet train era is no longer a distant dream.

The B28 Trainset: Specifications and Capacity

The B28 train will have a design speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed of around 250 kmph. The trainsets are expected to feature modern, air-conditioned coaches with a capacity of over 500 passengers.

Two prototype eight-coach trainsets are being developed under a ₹866.87 crore contract awarded to BEML in October 2024 by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. The project is being executed in collaboration with Integral Coach Factory, which awarded BEML the contract to design, manufacture, and commission two high-speed trainsets.

The Aditya Plant: Built for Speed

The new Aditya manufacturing complex has been specifically developed for producing B28 coaches, supporting India’s push towards indigenous high-speed rail technology. The facility was inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, underscoring the government’s commitment to the project at the highest levels.

Timeline: When Will the B28 Run?

The first prototype is expected to be ready by March 2027, and the train is likely to become operational by August 2027 after trials. For its inaugural run, the Railways has identified a 97-kilometre stretch between Surat and Vapi  part of the larger Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project  where operations will begin using the B28 trainsets.

Transforming India’s Travel Landscape

The implications of high-speed rail go far beyond faster commutes. Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru could drop to just 73 minutes, effectively integrating the two metropolitan areas into a single economic hub.

The minister emphasised that high-speed rail technology represents one of the most complex engineering domains  making BEML’s indigenous development all the more remarkable.

Why This Matters: Atmanirbhar Bharat on Rails

The B28 project is a cornerstone of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision applied to rail infrastructure. Once completed, the train will undergo extensive testing and trials before deployment. India joins a select club of nations capable of designing and manufacturing high-speed rail technology domestically, a feat that strengthens both its industrial base and its global credibility in advanced engineering.
