The preliminary figures were announced by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) on October 30, 2026, during TIFFCOM, an international content market held alongside the Tokyo International Film Festival.

For the first time, the industry’s overall market surpassed ¥4 trillion, reflecting the growing commercial influence of Japanese animation across cinema, television, streaming, merchandise, music, events and international licensing.

Overseas Demand Accounts for More Than Half of Revenue

International audiences played a major role in the industry’s growth. Overseas revenue reached approximately ¥2.54 trillion ($16.1 billion), rising 17.2% compared with 2024.

This represented 57.1% of the total anime market, meaning international spending continued to exceed domestic revenue for the third consecutive year.

Japan’s domestic anime market also achieved a record, reaching approximately ¥1.91 trillion ($12.1 billion), an increase of 14.1%.

The figures demonstrate how anime has developed from a popular Japanese entertainment format into a major global industry.

Blockbuster Films and Merchandise Drive Growth

Successful anime releases and their related products have helped expand the industry’s commercial reach.

One of the major contributors was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, which earned approximately $793 million worldwide in 2025. Other successful releases included Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc and Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback.

Beyond cinema, anime generates revenue through streaming subscriptions, merchandise, character licensing, music, live entertainment and events. These additional business areas allow popular titles to maintain commercial value long after their initial release.

Animation Studios Also Report Record Revenue

The growth has extended to Japanese animation production companies. According to the AJA figures, studio revenue reached approximately ¥505.5 billion ($3.2 billion) in 2025, an increase of 8.4% from the previous year.

Overseas projects accounted for 27.9% of studio revenue, compared with 25.5% in 2024. More studios are also seeking opportunities to retain ownership or a share of the intellectual property they help create, allowing them to benefit from licensing and other international revenue streams.

Japan Targets Further Global Expansion by 2033

The Japanese government aims to increase overseas sales of anime to ¥6 trillion (approximately $38 billion) annually by 2033. This target forms part of a broader ambition to grow international sales of Japanese content, including games, manga, films, television and music.

Industry representatives have also highlighted the importance of adapting content to different languages, cultures and legal requirements. Addressing piracy and improving the business environment for creators and production studios will be important for sustainable growth.

Final Word

Japan’s record anime market reflects the medium’s growing influence across international entertainment. With overseas audiences contributing more than half of total revenue, anime is becoming an increasingly important part of Japan’s creative economy. Continued investment in intellectual property, international partnerships and production talent will be essential to maintaining this momentum.
