The release of the book “Buddhist Exchanges between India and Japan: Japanese Buddhist Encountering India and Modern Buddhist Studies”, co-edited by Professor Masahiko Togawa and Prof.(Dr.) Ranjana Mukhopadhyay , marked an important milestone in the study of Buddhist connections between the two nations. Published by Routledge this year, the book represents the culmination of an academic journey that began in 2017 with a shared vision to explore the many dimensions of Buddhist interaction between India and Japan.
What started as a focused research initiative gradually grew into a larger academic collaboration, bringing together scholars who study Buddhism through history, culture, philosophy, archaeology, and modern religious studies. The published volume now stands as a meaningful contribution to global Buddhist scholarship and as a testament to the deep intellectual ties linking India and Japan.
The book launch event witnessed an enthusiastic and encouraging turnout, especially noteworthy given the specialized academic nature of the subject. The occasion was honored by the presence of His Excellency Abe Noriyaki, Minister (Political Affairs) at the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, who attended along with his wife. Their presence added dignity and significance to the celebration of this scholarly achievement.
Adding further distinction to the event was the keynote address by Professor Richard Jaffe of Duke University, who joined the program online despite the early morning hours in the United States. His participation held special meaning, as his research has played an influential role in shaping the academic approach and understanding reflected in the book. His address highlighted the importance of continued dialogue between Indian and Japanese scholars in the field of Buddhist studies.
The academic discussion that followed was enriched by a detailed and thoughtful review by Professor Himanshu Prabha Ray, who examined the book from the perspective of her own extensive research in archaeology and Buddhist history. Her insights brought depth and context to the themes explored in the volume and sparked engaging discussion among scholars and students present.
The event was also made special by the presence of two contributing authors who traveled from Japan to be part of the launch Professor Okuyama Naoji of Koyasan University and Professor Bessho Yusuke of Komazawa University. Their participation highlighted the truly international and collaborative nature of the project. The authors shared reflections on their individual chapters and the shared academic effort that brought the book together.
On a personal note, the presence of the author’s brother, Lt. Col. Anjan Kumar Mukhopadhyaya, added a warm and emotional dimension to the occasion, making the milestone even more memorable.
The successful launch of this book stands not only as an academic achievement but also as a bridge between two ancient civilizations connected through the shared legacy of Buddhism. It reflects years of dedication, research, and cross-border collaboration among scholars who believe in the power of knowledge to strengthen cultural and intellectual ties.
The editors expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all colleagues, students, and friends who attended the book launch on a weekend afternoon and supported the project over the years. Their presence and encouragement turned the event into a celebration of shared learning, partnership, and scholarly friendship.
As the book begins its journey into universities, research institutions, and libraries across the world, it is expected to inspire further study and dialogue on the enduring Buddhist relationships between India and Japan relationships that continue to shape both historical understanding and modern academic inquiry.
