AOMORI, Japan — The streets of Aomori City burst into color and sound Saturday evening as the Aomori Nebuta Festival, one of Japan’s most iconic summer celebrations, officially kicked off in grand style. Drawing thousands of locals and tourists, the vibrant event transformed the city into a living canvas of light, music, and cultural pride.

At 7 p.m., the first of sixteen massive, illuminated floats, known as nebuta, began making their way along a 3-kilometer parade route, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of traditional taiko drums and the melodic notes of flutes. Towering nearly five meters high, the floats depict larger-than-life images of legendary samurai, mythical creatures, and historical heroes, each one painstakingly crafted by local artists.

Adding to the electrifying atmosphere were the energetic “haneto” dancers, leaping and shouting in sync with the music. Dressed in colorful yukata and flowered sashes, the dancers — from small children to seniors — moved in unison, embodying the spirit of celebration and unity.

Spectators lined the route, many chanting alongside the haneto with cries of “Rassera, Rassera!” — a signature call of the festival. Phones and cameras captured every glowing detail as the floats passed, each one met with awe and applause.

A man from Ibaraki Prefecture, attending the festival for the first time in person, shared his excitement:

“I had seen it on video before, but being here in person is on a whole different level. The energy, the size of the floats, the music — it’s unforgettable. I definitely want to come again next year.”

A young woman from Tokyo was particularly captivated by the haneto dancers.

“It was amazing to see everyone, from toddlers to adults, jumping in rhythm together. It felt like the entire city was dancing.”

The Aomori Nebuta Festival, which dates back centuries, is deeply rooted in local traditions. The floats, made of washi paper over wireframes and lit from within, take months to create and are often inspired by themes of bravery, justice, and folklore.

The festival will continue through Thursday, offering nightly processions, local food stalls, and cultural performances. The grand finale on the last evening will feature a fireworks display over the ocean, with the floats majestically floating in the water — a breathtaking send-off for one of Japan’s most cherished summer events.

Aomori Nebuta Festival Schedule Highlights:

  • Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture
  • August 2 – August 7, 2025
  • Fireworks & float display on the ocean: August 7

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned festivalgoer, the Aomori Nebuta Festival offers an unforgettable glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural tapestry, wrapped in light, sound, and joy.
