The 2+2 format brings together foreign and defence ministers of both countries to discuss bilateral, regional, and global security issues. This dialogue was initiated to further deepen security and defence cooperation and elevate the special strategic and global partnership between India and Japan.

The upcoming dialogue is expected to focus on expanding cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region amidst China’s growing assertiveness. Both nations share a common vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific and have been working closely to counter Beijing’s maritime ambitions.

Beyond the 2+2 dialogue, separate bilateral talks between the defence and foreign ministers of both countries are also scheduled.

The first edition of the India-Japan 2+2 dialogue was held in India in 2019, while the second took place in Japan in 2022.
