The man, in a viral video titled “Famous Indian Movies in Japan,” admitted that Indian cinema isn’t a mainstream genre in his country. However, he insisted that three films – Cheeni KumThe Lunchbox, and Garam Masala – have managed to carve a niche for themselves among Japanese cinephiles.

While the exact reasons for their popularity remain a subject of speculation, it’s possible that the movies’ unique blend of humour, romance, and, of course, the ubiquitous Indian spice, garam masala, have struck a chord with Japanese viewers. Garam Masala itself, a complex blend of spices, is known for its ability to add depth and complexity to dishes, much like the intricate plots and characters in these films.

Cheeni Kum, a romantic comedy, explores the unconventional love story between a 60-year-old chef and a woman half his age. The Lunchbox, a heartwarming drama, revolves around a mistaken delivery of lunchboxes that leads to an unexpected connection between two strangers. And Garam Masala, a comedy of errors, features two friends who pretend to be each other to woo women.

The video has sparked a lively discussion among both Indian and Japanese audiences. While some are skeptical about the claim, others are intrigued by the possibility of a hidden gem in Bollywood’s vast library. Regardless of the truth behind the claim, it’s undeniable that these three movies have managed to transcend cultural boundaries and find an audience in a country thousands of miles away.
