Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. He died of age-related medical issues, according to a statement released by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
Dr. Singh, who had been unwell for several months, was at his home when he lost consciousness. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to AIIMS, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India for two terms, from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Known for his humility, wisdom, and vision, he was widely respected both in India and abroad.
He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media platform X, calling Dr. Singh “one of India’s most distinguished leaders.” He highlighted Dr. Singh’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a respected economist and leader. “His wisdom and humility were always visible. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi said.
Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rushed to AIIMS upon hearing the news. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party MP Rahul Gandhi, who were attending a meeting in Karnataka, are returning to Delhi to pay their respects.
Architect of India’s Economic Reforms
Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and played a key role in shaping India’s economic future. In 1991, he introduced major economic reforms that pulled the country out of a financial crisis. These reforms opened up the Indian economy, leading to growth and prosperity.
Even as Prime Minister, his focus on inclusive growth and economic stability remained central to his leadership.
