Okunoshima Island, located in Hiroshima Prefecture and affectionately known as “Rabbit Island” due to its thriving population of over 1,000 free-roaming rabbits, is currently facing a concerning situation. Since late November, authorities have discovered 77 rabbit carcasses on the island, prompting an investigation into the cause of these deaths.
On January 21, 2025, police arrested 25-year-old Riku Hotta from east of Kyoto on suspicion of animal cruelty after he was seen kicking a rabbit on Okunoshima Island. The injured rabbit reportedly died shortly after the incident. Authorities are now examining whether Hotta is connected to the recent spate of rabbit deaths on the island.
The Environment Ministry has reported that the deceased rabbits exhibited unnatural injuries, such as broken bones, suggesting possible foul play. However, other potential causes, including infectious diseases or environmental factors like cold weather, have not been ruled out. The ministry is collaborating with veterinarians and relevant organizations to determine the exact cause and has increased monitoring efforts on the island.
Okunoshima Island is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who come to interact with and feed the friendly rabbits. The island also holds historical significance, having been the site of a poison gas factory during World War II, now commemorated by a museum.
The recent rabbit deaths have raised concerns among animal welfare groups and the general public. Authorities are urging visitors to report any suspicious activities and to treat the animals with care and respect. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of Okunoshima’s rabbit population.
