Republic Day, one of India’s most significant national celebrations, will mark its 76th anniversary this year on January 26, 2025. This day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, a historic moment that transformed India into a sovereign democratic republic. However, the recurring question about whether it is the 76th or 77th Republic Day often arises, requiring a closer look at historical milestones and calculations.

Understanding the Count

The first Republic Day celebration took place on January 26, 1950. Each subsequent year added one to the count, making the event in 2025 the 76th Republic Day celebration:

• 2024 – 75th Republic Day

• 2025 – 76th Republic Day

This year’s event holds special significance, marking 75 years since India’s transition from a dominion under British rule to an independent republic governed by its own Constitution.

Grand Celebrations on Kartavya Path

The annual parade at Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) near India Gate in New Delhi will be the centerpiece of the celebrations. The parade will feature vibrant cultural tableaux from 15 states and union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Bihar, showcasing India’s diversity and cultural richness. The parade will also highlight the strength of the Indian Armed Forces and other paramilitary contingents.

Tickets for the parade, with seating arrangements for approximately 77,000 spectators, have been made available online via the Ministry of Defence’s Amantran Portal (aamantran.mod.gov.in) and offline at locations like Sena Bhawan, Shastri Bhawan, and Jantar Mantar. Prices for the Beating Retreat Ceremony on January 29 are set at Rs 100 and can also be purchased through the Amantran Portal or the MSeva Mobile App.

Theme for Republic Day 2025

This year’s theme, “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Development), celebrates India’s rich cultural heritage while highlighting the nation’s progress and aspirations for the future.

Chief Guest and Diplomatic Significance

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will be the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations, signifying the strong and growing ties between India and Indonesia. His presence underscores India’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and strengthening diplomatic relations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Traffic Advisory for Delhi

To ensure public safety and smooth movement during the parade rehearsals and main event, the Delhi Police has issued a comprehensive traffic advisory. Citizens are encouraged to follow the guidelines and plan their travel accordingly.

A Symbol of Unity and Progress

Republic Day is a powerful reminder of India’s journey as a democratic republic, united by its Constitution and enriched by its diversity. As India celebrates 75 years of its Constitution in 2025, the event promises to inspire a sense of national pride, cultural unity, and hope for the future.

This Republic Day, citizens from all walks of life will come together to honor the values enshrined in the Constitution and celebrate India’s progress, diversity, and resilience.
