Singaporean parents are investing significantly in their children’s early education by sending them on cultural exchange programs in Japan. These programs offer a unique opportunity for young children to experience a different culture, education system, and language firsthand.
One such parent, Winnie Chia, sent her six-year-old daughter, Leanne, on a week-long exchange program in Omori town, Tokyo. Chia, who works in finance, believes in providing enriching experiences for her children and saw this as a valuable opportunity for Leanne to broaden her horizons before starting primary school.
Another parent, real estate agent Ken Sim, enrolled his five-year-old daughter, Eden, in a two-week program at Ueda International School in Nagano. Sim aimed to expose Eden to a different educational approach and foster her personal development beyond academics.
Cultural Differences and Educational Approaches
The Japanese education system, particularly at the preschool level, emphasizes experiential learning, nature-based activities, and personal development over rote memorization. This contrasts with the Singaporean system, which often prioritizes academic learning and has a higher teacher-to-student ratio.
Overcoming the Language Barrier
While neither parent nor child spoke Japanese, communication was facilitated through body language, simple translations, and the use of translation apps.
Cost and Considerations
These programs come with a significant price tag. Chia spent approximately S$3,000, while Sim invested around S$5,600, both covering accommodation and school fees.
Parents emphasized the importance of considering their child’s personality. Outgoing children who are adaptable to new environments are likely to thrive in such programs.
Benefits and Lasting Memories
Despite the cost, both parents believe the experience was invaluable. Leanne returned with broadened horizons and cherished memories, while Eden gained independence and cultural awareness. These programs offer a unique opportunity for young children to develop global perspectives and create lasting memories.
