A new immersive entertainment arena inspired by the famous Sphere in Las Vegas could be built in Tokyo, as Japanese financial services company SBI Holdings explores a potential collaboration with Madison Square Garden (MSG) Entertainment. The proposed project could introduce Japan to a large-scale venue combining advanced visual technology, sound and live entertainment. However, discussions remain at an early stage, and the project has not been confirmed.

SBI Holdings, a Tokyo-based financial services group, has reportedly entered discussions with MSG Entertainment about developing a Japanese version of the Sphere concept.

According to reports published in April 2026, the project could require an investment of approximately ¥350 billion, equivalent to around US$2.2 billion. SBI Holdings Chairman and President Yoshitaka Kitao indicated that the final cost could rise to ¥500 billion, depending on the project’s requirements and expenses.

No final agreement or construction schedule has been announced.

Odaiba Considered as a Potential Location

Tokyo’s waterfront district of Odaiba has been mentioned as a possible site for the proposed arena. Known for its entertainment attractions, shopping complexes and waterfront setting, the area could offer a suitable location for a major visitor destination.

Early reports suggest the venue could accommodate around 20,000 people and feature a fully enclosed spherical structure. These details remain preliminary and may change as discussions progress.

What Makes the Sphere Concept Different?

The original Sphere in Las Vegas is known for its distinctive spherical exterior display and immersive interior screen. Its technology combines high-resolution visuals, specialised sound and multisensory effects to create experiences for concerts, films and other live events.

Sphere Entertainment describes its technology as including a high-resolution interior LED display, immersive sound and effects designed to engage audiences beyond traditional screens.

A similar venue in Tokyo could potentially host concerts, visual productions, sporting events and other entertainment experiences, although its final programming has not been announced.

Potential Impact on Tokyo’s Entertainment Industry

If developed, a Sphere-style arena could add a new attraction to Tokyo’s entertainment landscape and create opportunities for live performances, tourism and technology-driven productions.

The project could also bring together expertise in architecture, digital displays, sound engineering and event production. However, its eventual impact would depend on the final investment, location, operating model and range of events offered.

Part of a Wider Global Expansion

Sphere Entertainment has been exploring opportunities to establish additional venues in international markets. In 2026, the company also announced plans for Sphere Abu Dhabi, while discussions continued around other potential locations.

The discussions involving SBI Holdings would represent another possible step in bringing the immersive entertainment concept to a new market.

Final Word

Tokyo could eventually become home to a Sphere-style arena, with SBI Holdings and MSG Entertainment reportedly discussing the possibility of developing a large-scale immersive venue in Japan.

With Odaiba under consideration and investment estimates running into hundreds of billions of yen, the proposal could become a significant entertainment development if it moves forward. For now, however, the project remains under discussion, with key details yet to be finalised.
