Tokyo Exhibition, Tokyo, Japan — A special exhibition honoring the life and work of legendary manga artist Tezuka Osamu opened to the public on Saturday in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward, drawing fans and art enthusiasts eager to revisit the legacy of the creator behind beloved classics like Astro Boy, Phoenix, and Black Jack.
The exhibition is being held at the restored Tokiwa-so apartment building, a historical site that once housed Tezuka and several other manga pioneers during their formative years. The space has been transformed into a nostalgic yet vibrant homage to the roots of modern manga, offering an intimate look into the artist’s personal and professional journey.
Over 110 original exhibits are on display, including rare hand-drawn illustrations and concept sketches from some of Tezuka’s most influential works. Visitors can explore the detailed creative process behind Astro Boy, a series that helped shape the future of Japanese animation, and dive into the philosophical depth of Phoenix, which reflects on life, death, and rebirth.
Also showcased are pieces from Black Jack, the gripping story of an unlicensed yet brilliant surgeon, which remains one of the most respected medical dramas in manga history. Through these works, the exhibition highlights key themes that consistently ran through Tezuka’s storytelling — the sanctity of life, environmental awareness, and a universal empathy that transcends cultures and generations.
Speaking at the event preview held on Friday, Tezuka Productions President Matsutani Takayuki emphasized the timeless nature of Tezuka’s messages.
“Tezuka’s way of thinking transcended time and space. His stories speak to issues we still face today, from environmental destruction to the importance of compassion,” said Matsutani. “I hope today’s children will read his works and feel the emotions he wanted to convey.”
Known as the “God of Manga,” Tezuka Osamu revolutionized the medium in postwar Japan, not only in terms of visual storytelling but also in the depth and diversity of his narratives. His influence stretches across generations and borders, shaping everything from anime to global pop culture.
The exhibition provides interactive zones for younger visitors and educational panels that explain Tezuka’s impact on society and how he tackled pressing global themes through his art. It’s a rare chance to see his genius up close and understand why his legacy remains so relevant in today’s world.
The exhibition runs through November 24, offering a rich, reflective experience for manga fans, families, and art lovers alike.
