Japan is experiencing a severe heatwave this summer, and forecasters warn that the extreme temperatures are set to peak this week, with many regions already seeing dangerous levels of heat.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a persistent high-pressure system over the Japanese archipelago is pushing daytime temperatures to record-breaking highs, particularly in central and western Japan.

Temperatures Soar Nationwide

Cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka have reported temperatures above 37°C (98.6°F), while inland areas like Kumagaya and Gifu are forecast to reach or exceed 39°C (102°F) in the coming days.

“This is an extremely dangerous level of heat,” said a JMA official. “People must take precautions. This week will likely mark the peak of this summer’s heatwave.”

Nighttime temperatures have also remained high, offering little relief and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.

Sharp Rise in Heatstroke Cases

Hospitals across the country have reported a surge in heatstroke-related emergencies. According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, more than 5,000 people have been hospitalized in the past week due to symptoms like dizziness, fainting, and dehydration.

Local governments have set up cooling shelters in public buildings, libraries, and community centers. Residents are being urged to:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activity during midday hours

  • Wear light, breathable clothing

  • Use air conditioning when possible

  • Check on elderly neighbors and family members regularly

Disruptions to Daily Life

The extreme heat has started to impact daily life and infrastructure:

  • School sports and summer events have been canceled in many prefectures.

  • Some rail services are operating at reduced speeds due to concerns about rail expansion in the heat.

  • Electricity demand has surged, raising concerns about grid stability, although power providers say supplies remain sufficient for now.

Climate Change and Future Risks

Experts warn that such extreme weather events are likely to become more frequent due to climate change.

“This is no longer a rare occurrence,” said Dr. Kaori Sakamoto, a climate researcher at Kyoto University. “Japan must adapt quickly—by improving urban cooling systems, strengthening public health responses, and reducing emissions—to protect communities from worsening heatwaves.”

The average summer temperature in Japan has already increased by more than 1°C over the past century, with heatwaves starting earlier and lasting longer.

When Will the Heat Subside?

The JMA expects the heatwave to continue until at least the weekend, after which a slight drop in temperatures may occur due to a shift in weather patterns and potential rainfall in some northern and coastal areas.

Until then, extreme heat alerts remain in effect for much of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

Heat Safety Tips from the Government

  • Drink water frequently, even if you are not thirsty

  • Avoid direct sunlight, especially from 10 AM to 4 PM

  • Use fans or air conditioners when indoors

  • Rest often and avoid strenuous activity

  • Wear a hat or carry an umbrella when going out
