Japan has appointed a seasoned diplomat, Keiichi Ono, as its new ambassador to India, a strategic move ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to the country later this year. Ono, who has served as a senior deputy minister for foreign affairs and played a crucial role in the 2013 G7 summit in Hiroshima, is well-versed in Japan-US relations.
Ono will replace Hiroshi Suzuki, who has been appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom. His appointment comes at a time when India and Japan are strengthening their bilateral ties. Last month, the two countries held another round of 2+2 dialogue, where they agreed to revise their landmark 2008 agreement for security cooperation. The updated agreement is expected to reflect contemporary priorities and address current security challenges.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan is likely to take place later this year. During his visit, he is expected to meet with outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Additionally, Japanese media reports suggest that Kishida will travel to the United States for the UNGA session and participate in the Quad summit, which India is expected to host on the sidelines.
Ono’s appointment signals Japan’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with India, a major player in the Indo-Pacific region. As the two countries continue to deepen their cooperation in various areas, including security, economy, and culture, Ono’s expertise and experience will be invaluable in fostering closer ties between the two nations.
