Tokyo, Japan: Japan has recorded its first official “kokushobi” or “cruelly hot day” of the year after temperatures crossed 40°C in several cities, underscoring the growing intensity of summer heat across the country. The term, introduced by the Japan Meteorological Agency JMA earlier this year, is used to describe days when temperatures reach 40°C 104°F or higher, highlighting the serious health risks posed by extreme heat.
On Tuesday, Tajimi in Gifu Prefecture recorded 40.3°C, while Toyota in Aichi Prefecture reached 40.1°C and Gujo in Gifu touched 40.0°C. For Gujo and Toyota, these were the highest temperatures ever recorded at their respective weather stations. More than 270 weather observation points across Japan also reported temperatures above 35°C, classified as an “extremely hot day” or moshobi.

The JMA has issued heatstroke alerts across much of the country, urging residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, use air conditioning, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Officials warn that the dangerous conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.
Japan has experienced increasingly severe summers in recent years. In 2025, the country recorded its highest-ever temperature of 41.8°C, while more than 100,000 people were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses during the summer season. Experts say rising global temperatures are contributing to more frequent and intense heatwaves, increasing health risks and placing pressure on infrastructure, agriculture, and daily life. Authorities continue to advise people especially older adults, children, and those with existing health conditions to remain vigilant as the extreme heat continues across large parts of Japan.
