The Indian Navy’s indigenous stealth multi-role frigate, INS Shivalik (F47), has arrived at Yokosuka port, Japan, to participate in the eighth edition of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX) scheduled for 2024.
This deployment comes after a successful operational sea deployment (OSD) by INS Shivalik to the South China Sea (SCS) and the Pacific Ocean. JIMEX 24, known for its growing complexity over the years, provides a valuable platform for the Indian Navy (IN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) to strengthen their operational interoperability and reaffirm their shared commitment to maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.
Strengthening Maritime Ties
The arrival of INS Shivalik at Yokosuka was marked by a warm welcome from Vice Admiral Ito Hiroshi, Commander of the JMSDF Yokosuka District, and Ambassador Sibi George, the Indian Ambassador to Japan. This exchange highlights the strong ties between the two nations and their navies.
Focus on Interoperability
JIMEX 24 will involve both harbour and sea phases. The harbour phase will focus on professional interactions, sports events, and social gatherings, fostering camaraderie between the Indian and Japanese personnel. The sea phase will see the two navies conduct joint exercises designed to enhance their ability to operate together effectively. These exercises are expected to encompass a range of maritime operations, including anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and air defence drills.
Significance of JIMEX
JIMEX serves as a crucial platform for India and Japan to showcase their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The successful completion of these exercises will contribute to maintaining a stable and secure maritime environment in the region, crucial for global trade and commerce.
