A Bengaluru-based technology company is among ten firms facing sanctions from Japan for allegedly assisting Russia in circumventing international economic sanctions. The Japanese Foreign Ministry announced the punitive measures, which include asset freezes and export bans, on these companies from India, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and the United Arab Emirates.
This action aligns with Japan’s commitment to upholding sanctions against Russia, following its invasion of Ukraine. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had previously emphasized this resolve at the G7 summit in Italy.
The specific details of the Indian company’s alleged involvement in aiding Russia’s evasion of sanctions haven’t been disclosed. The sanctions themselves will restrict the company’s ability to conduct financial transactions and trade with Japan.
The move by Japan reflects the international community’s efforts to tighten the economic screws on Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine. Whether other countries will follow suit with similar sanctions against the Indian firm remains to be seen.
