Some battles are fought with weapons, while others are fought with courage, conviction and an unbreakable spirit. Bhikaiji Cama belonged to the second kind.
Born in Bombay in 1861, Bhikaiji Cama dedicated her life to India’s freedom struggle at a time when women had very few opportunities to step into public life. She left behind comfort and privilege to stand for a cause much greater than herself the freedom of her country.

Far away from India, she continued to raise her voice against British rule. In 1907, at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, she famously unfurled an early version of the Indian national flag and spoke passionately about India’s independence. At a time when even speaking openly against colonial rule could come at a great personal cost, she chose courage over silence.
Her journey teaches us that you do not need to be powerful to make a difference; you need to be determined.
Bhikaiji Cama spent years away from her homeland, faced restrictions and sacrificed a comfortable life. Yet she never allowed distance, difficulty or fear to weaken her purpose. Her story reminds us that meaningful change often begins with one person who refuses to accept that things cannot change.
Today, our challenges may look different. We may struggle with failure, rejection, financial difficulties, uncertainty or self-doubt. But Bhikaiji Cama’s life gives us a simple lesson: your circumstances do not decide your destination, your courage and persistence do.
When the road becomes difficult, remember the woman who stood thousands of kilometres away from home and still carried the dream of a free India in her heart.
