In a major boost to tourism and hospitality in Northeast India, the Government of Meghalaya has partnered with the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) to develop a premium Taj Resort & Spa at the scenic Umiam Lake.
This upcoming luxury property, to be operated under IHCL’s iconic Taj Hotels brand, is expected to redefine the region’s tourism landscape by offering world-class amenities while preserving the natural beauty and cultural essence of Meghalaya.
Strategically located near Shillong, Umiam Lake often referred to as “Barapani” is one of the state’s most picturesque destinations. The new Taj Resort & Spa aims to leverage this breathtaking setting, providing guests with panoramic lake views, eco-conscious architecture, and immersive local experiences.
The collaboration reflects Meghalaya’s growing focus on sustainable tourism and high-value hospitality investments. By bringing in IHCL, one of India’s leading hospitality companies, the state government aims to attract both domestic and international travelers seeking luxury experiences in offbeat destinations.
Officials highlighted that the project will not only elevate Meghalaya’s position on India’s tourism map but also create employment opportunities and support local communities. The resort is expected to incorporate regional design elements, local cuisine, and curated cultural programs to offer an authentic yet upscale stay.
With this development, Meghalaya joins a growing list of emerging luxury destinations in India, as hospitality giants expand beyond traditional hotspots to tap into the unexplored beauty of the Northeast.
