What is the Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM)?

Shukrayaan is designed to study Venus’s surface, atmosphere, and geological structure. It will be positioned in an orbit around the planet to gather crucial data on its weather patterns, atmospheric composition, and potential geological activities. The spacecraft will be equipped with advanced scientific instruments to carry out these observations.

Why Venus?

Venus, often referred to as Earth’s “sister planet,” shares similarities in size, mass, and composition with our home planet. However, its surface conditions are incredibly hostile, with temperatures reaching a scorching 470 degrees Celsius and an atmosphere primarily composed of carbon dioxide. Understanding Venus’s past and present conditions can provide valuable insights into the evolution of Earth’s climate and potential future scenarios.

Key Objectives of Shukrayaan:

  1. Surface Mapping: The mission will utilize advanced radar technology to penetrate the thick clouds covering Venus and map its surface features, including volcanoes, mountains, and plains.
  2. Atmospheric Studies: Shukrayaan will investigate the composition and dynamics of Venus’s atmosphere, focusing on understanding the greenhouse effect and the planet’s high surface temperatures.
  3. Geological Exploration: The mission aims to study Venus’s geological history, including past volcanic activity and tectonic processes.

Significance of the Mission:

Shukrayaan represents a significant step forward for India’s space program, demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities in planetary exploration. The mission has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of Venus and provide crucial insights into the evolution of terrestrial planets.

Conclusion

With the government’s approval, ISRO is poised to embark on this exciting mission to Venus. Shukrayaan’s findings will not only deepen our knowledge of our neighboring planet but also contribute to our understanding of the broader solar system and the potential for life beyond Earth.
