India and Japan Join Forces to Tackle Space Debris

In a significant step towards ensuring the safety of space, Indian startup InspeCity has partnered with Japan’s Orbital Lasers to explore a novel approach to clearing space debris. The joint venture aims to develop a system that uses lasers to remove or reposition defunct satellites and other orbital debris that pose a threat to operational spacecraft.   

Orbital Lasers’ innovative technology utilizes laser energy to vaporize tiny portions of the debris’s surface, gradually stabilizing its orbit. This controlled degradation process can significantly reduce the risk of collisions with active satellites.   

The two companies plan to conduct a space-based demonstration of this technology after 2027, pending regulatory approvals from both India and Japan. This ambitious project underscores the growing concern over the increasing amount of space debris and the need for proactive solutions to mitigate its impact.
